Dear Eleanor 07:18
Dear Eleanor Can you hear my heart A-pounding on your door Wherefore Is the door locked Cruel Eleanor? Belong To me my doe-like one I can tell from your eye That I Am not Indifferent to thy heart My heart What am I to think Of such a forward man Is he asking for my hand? So soon after I lost One who meant so much to me? Dear Eleanor The purse strings of my heart Are loosened up for you It’s true There are things We ought to talk about Mister Slope I’m flattered to be sure But have you noticed that I wear black upon my back I’m still grieving day and night For one who meant so much to me Dear Eleanor You and I can be So happy you and I If we try Especially With your thousand pounds a year My heart Are you not a-weary of playing the part Shall I remove these widow’s weeds And spend my days amid the trees And let the breeze mend my life And scatter all men’s cocksure cries To the four corners of the sky?

about

Nine years ago Anaïs and I wrote a song cycle about the signs of the Zodiac. Our idea was to record a 13-track album where each song would correspond to a specific alignment of the stars and show how that alignment shapes individual destinies. From Aries to Pisces each sign had its own song. (We didn’t really believe in any of this of course, but it was a good gimmick).

For various reasons the album was never completed and we moved on to other projects.

But just the other day I was rummaging through my things and came across an old USB key holding hundreds of recorded songs, song fragments, guitar licks and snatches of melodies inside it. Among all this sonic jumble were the four songs of the Zodiac. Listening to them brought me back to another time, a time when I was still relatively young and not yet saddled with the responsibilities of parenthood, when I could play guitar days on end without a worry in the world. The good old days, you know?

So I thought what the heck I’m going to take these 4 songs and release them as a ‘lost’ EP. For time escapes us all but there’s nothing like a song to hang on to the coattails of time.
